MY ENCORE CAREER

I am Dr Victoria Hewitt, a doctor who never followed a conventional career path.  I left clinical practice because I was burnt out, felt undervalued and had lost any sense of purpose.  What happened to the medical student I used to be, the person who thought she was going to change the world?  I am inspired by doctors who, just like me, are crafting new, purposeful careers in their later years.

 I began my medical career as a military doctor, training as a GP.  In civilian life, and with a family, I specialised in hospice and palliative care, developed expertise in quality improvement and transitioned into education.   

When I left clinical practice I thought I was the only one of my medical school intake who had stepped away from direct patient care but I was wrong.  It was only with the support of a coach that I gained the confidence to understand my core values and follow a second "encore" career that allows me to live them every single day.  I trained to become a coach so that I can support others to create their own encore careers.

I set up Hamilton Hill Coaching and Consultancy to support others, just like me, to reconnect with the optimism of our youth AND deploy our wisdom and talents to change the world

Some people told me I was following my heart over my head, but what I was really doing was following my purpose - I just didn't realise it.  As soon as I understood my values and explicitly connected with my purpose everything fell into place.  I joined a respected, international NGO and became an advocate and now work to support others around the world to improve access to and quality of palliative care.
