9 Signs You’re Ready for an Encore Career

Are you yearning for work that is more purposeful, energising and aligned with who you are now?

Are you ready to put your experience to work in a new and more meaningful way?

For many people, the move toward an encore career begins when the work that was once secure or rewarding is no longer fulfilling. For me, it happened when I realised, in a conversation with my husband, that I did not have a dream. I had been working so hard to help other people achieve their dreams that I forgot about my own. In the words of Rodgers and Hammerstein, if you don't have a dream, how you gonna have a dream come true? This realisation stopped me in my tracks and I created my own dream story.

An encore career is less about starting over and more about redirecting your experience toward work that feels meaningful in your later working life. I reconnected with the optimism of my youth and the drive to do good in the world and leave a legacy for those who come next.

Signs that you're ready for an encore career

If that sounds familiar, these signs may help you recognise whether you are ready to step into your authentic encore career.

1. Your current work no longer feels enough

One of the clearest signs is that your present career still functions, but no longer satisfies. You may be competent, respected, and experienced, yet still feel a sense of emptiness or restlessness that you cannot ignore.

2. You are craving more purpose

The pull toward an encore career often starts with purpose. You want your work to contribute something that matters, whether that means helping others, solving a problem, or using your skills in a more meaningful way.

3. You Know what you want to offer

Encore careers are about connecting your wisdom and experience to your purpose. You will have a sense of what you want to offer the world, evidence to show that it is more than optimistic naivety. It could be work-based skills, knowledge and expertise as well as your judgement, your compassion, your leadership, or a combination of these.

4. You can see the value in your experience

An encore career works best when you recognise that your career to this point has given you something valuable to direct towards new adventures. The question becomes not whether your experience still matters, but how to apply it in new ways to fulfil your purpose.

5. Your mindset is open

Openness is a strong sign that you are ready for change. You may not know exactly what comes next, but you are prepared to learn new tools, build new habits, meet new people and adapt to a different kind of work.

6. You want balance

At this stage, you may be less interested in status and more interested in finding a balance that works for you. Flexibility, pace, location, well-being, and balance may matter more than they did before. Equally, you may be feeling undervalued and bored and seek new challenges that reignite underused talents that have been dormant too long.

7. You feel adventure-ready

Many people spend a long time thinking about change without acting on it. After all, real change is rarely, if ever, found in your comfort zone. Readiness grows when you begin to test ideas in the real world through conversations, volunteering, small projects or trial roles.

8. Feedback becomes your friend

As any good appraiser will tell you, feedback is a powerful tool for reflection. Most genuine feedback from a trusted source confirms, on some level, what you already know. If you can hear feedback from a critical friend without feeling defeated, you are in a good position to refine your direction and make better choices.

9. Imperfect possibility beats perfect routine

An encore career often starts with a small, imperfect step that teaches you more than planning ever could. When the idea of something new feels more alive than staying where you are, that is often the clearest indication that you are ready to begin.
